Guyana sits on the South American mainland, but it is a fully Caribbean nation. It belongs to the Caribbean not by its coastline but by its language, its history, and its people.
Geographically it faces the Atlantic, not the Caribbean Sea. Most of the country sits on the Guiana Shield, an ancient block of rock that carries the rainforest, the Guiana Highlands, and waterfalls like Kaieteur. That interior belongs to the continent rather than the Caribbean. The Caribbean in Guyana is cultural, not maritime.
Guyana is the only country in South America where English is the official language. It was the British colony of British Guiana until independence in 1966, one of the three Guianas, alongside Dutch Suriname and French Guiana to the east. It grew up in the British Caribbean world, the same as Belize, Jamaica, and Barbados.
It is a full member of CARICOM, the Caribbean Community. Georgetown, its capital, is the headquarters of CARICOM, so the bloc that unites the Caribbean is run from Guyana itself.
Its people are Indo-Caribbean and Afro-Caribbean, descended from Indian indentured labourers and enslaved Africans brought to work the sugar plantations. It is the same plantation history and the same mixed Caribbean society as Trinidad and the islands.
So Guyana is Caribbean by culture and by politics, not by its shore. It shares the language, the people, and the history of the rest of the Caribbean, even while it faces the Atlantic.
